Pop quiz! Take out a clean sheet of paper and a Number 2 pencil.

True or False: The Declaration of Independence was signed July 4, 1776.

All signatures were not inked until August 2.

True or False: George Washington was the first president of the United States.

Actually John Hanson of Maryland was the first president under the Articles of Confederation. His official title was “President of the United States in Congress Assembled.” Washington was actually the ninth president.

True or False: Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin stove.

Although it bears Franklin’s name, David Rittenhouse was the creator of the famous stove.

True or False: The Founding Fathers of The United States were Christians who formed a government based on godly principles.

That’s a more complex answer. The “revisionist left” would like to make them all secular and the “religious right” would like to make them all saintly. Actually, while most believed in a divine being, Thomas Jefferson was most vocal in his claims that Jesus Christ was not the Son of God. He produced his own version of the Bible which deleted all references to miracles, the resurrection and Christ’s divinity. Benjamin Franklin was a Deist who believed that God created the universe and its natural laws but had no active role in contemporary life. (For more details click here.)

True or false: Only the United States has a fourth of July.

Actually the date is on every Western calendar! And every person on the planet—whether using the Western, Chinese, or Mayan calendar—is searching for freedom. But the majority of people on planet earth are not celebrating freedom today or on any other day. Those living under political bondage, however, can live free spiritually:

Then Jesus turned to the Jews who had claimed to believe in him. “If you stick with this, living out what I tell you, you are my disciples for sure. Then you will experience for yourselves the truth, and the truth will free you.”

Surprised, they said, “But we’re descendants of Abraham. We’ve never been slaves to anyone. How can you say, ‘The truth will free you’?” [Hello! You’re forgetting the centuries-long Egyptian and Babylonian captivities!]

Jesus said, “I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. A slave is a transient, who can’t come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through (John 8:31-38 MSG).

Have a happy fourth of July—wherever you are!
